Driving A BMW / 4 Series / 420d Coupe

BMW’S signature mid-sized coupe version of its 3 Series sedan may sport new nomenclature, but like a driving experience it is business as usual.

That may be to say, the 4 Series drives beautifully, with razor-sharp handling, steering that is full of feel-and-refinement and feedback at any speed legal on our roads.

Here we drive the 420d, the sole diesel option in a range that also comprises a trio of petrols (the brutal M4 is likewise imminent), developed primarily for Europe where its fuel-sipping ways yield lower road taxes.

It can be as frugal and punchy because so many modern Germanic oil-burners, but perhaps for Australia one might be even better served with all the cheaper and much more responsive 420i petrol.

Either way, this primary-generation 4 Series offers plenty of style and many more substance.
