For $600,000, This Ford V10-Powered 1998 Minardi F1 Is Your Ticket To Track Happiness

A Minardi Formula 1 car is currently up for sale in the UK and while it’s not the most remarkable F1 car to hit the market in recent months, any F1 car is cool enough in our books.

This car is chassis M198-01 and was the first M198 model built for the 1998 Formula 1 season. It made its competitive debut at the Australian Grand Prix with Shinji Nakano behind the wheel. The Japanese driver qualified in 22nd position for the race but had to retire on lap 8 following a driveshaft failure.

Minardi M198-01 was next used at the Brazilian Grand Prix where Nakano qualified 18th but retired yet again after spinning out into turn one after just three laps. The car made its final appearance during the 1998 season at the Argentine Grand Prix. It started 19th on the grid and Nakano finished in a respectable 13th place.

After the 1998 season, the RM Sotheby’s listing reveals the car was used as a show car by Fondmetal Minardi and the livery was updated to match the 1999 Minardi F1 car. The team kept the car until 2001 when it was sold to a production company and used as a film prop.

Fast forward to 2011 and M198-01 was purchased by Graham North who sent it to Tour-De-Force-Engineering (TDF) to be restored. TDF got in contact with the Minardi team and was able to purchase many spare parts from the racing outfit. Over a period of 18 months, the racer was re-built from the ground up and has subsequently been driven at a number famed tracks, including Brands Hatch, Blyton, and the Spa-Francorchamps F1 track.

Power is provided by a Ford V10 engine and the car has an asking price of £425,000 ($580,000).

Watch BRM’s 591 HP V16 Flamethrower Of An Engine Fire Up

British Racing Motors billed itself as the original British Formula 1 team and the brand is back, intent on building three continuation models of the 1950 Type 15 V16 Formula 1 car that brought it fame.

The team has just released footage of its supercharged 1.5-liter V16 engine firing up and spitting flames in testing.

“We didn’t want to push it too hard on the dyno,” Martin Smith, chief engine technician for the engine rebuild. “But even so we estimate we got about 550 BHP at 10,000 RPM and 2.5 psi – which is a huge step forward as we continue to build our experience and understanding of this astonishing engine.”

The engine will rev to at least 12,000 rpm and put out 591 HP. The one seen in the video is an original and was rebuilt by Hall and Hall, BRM’s technical partners, as a form of research before three new ones are produced to original spec.

“There is little margin for error with these parts, right down to 1,000th of a millimeter,” said Rick Hall, Hall and Hall founder. “For example, we had some earlier issues with the Rolls Royce supercharger, which we had to rebuild from scratch, so through trial and error we are flushing out these issues and also learning a great deal about how this engine behaves.”

The engine seen here was last run in 1999 at BRM’s 50th-anniversary celebration. It was driven by Jose Froilan Gonzalez, a veteran Formula 1 driver who drove with BRM and Ferrari, among others, between 1950 and 1960. During the demonstration run, though, he accidentally over-revved the engine, damaging it in the process.

The three cars that BRM builds will use original VIN numbers from the ’50s. These were allocated to the racing program in the era, but BRM never built them because of changing regulations in the sport. It’s a similar path to that taken by Jaguar when it built new XKSS continuation models

The first car has been commissioned by John Owen, the 81-year-old son of Sir Alfred Owen, BRM’s original owner, and is expected to be delivered later this year.

Ryan Tuerck Is Building A Toyota Supra Drift Car With A Formula 1-Derived V10

Professional drifter Ryan Tuerck is embarking on an ambitious project to create an A90 Toyota Supra drift car powered by a Judd Formula 1-derived V10 engine.

Tuerck has made quite a number of headlines in recent years thanks to his one-off Ferrari 458-powered Toyota 86 drifter, and in a recent YouTube video, announced his new project, adding that he has been wanting to make a drift car like this for a decade. The entire build will be detailed in a 14-part YouTube series that will kick off on October 18.

Judd has a wealth of experience building racing engines and the one Tuerck has got his hands on is a GV4 V10. This engine is naturally aspirated, displaces 4.0 liters and, while it was derived from the engines that Judd used in Formula 1, it was actually used in a handful of vehicles competing in the Sports Racing World Cup, such as the Rafanelli Riley & Scott LMP1 car that competed at the American Le Mans series in 1999.

The V10 pumps out 750 hp and revs to 11,000 rpm. It remains unclear how the drifter managed to source this engine nor what kind of transmission it will be coupled to, but there’s no doubt the finished product will be one of the maddest 2020 Supras in existence.
