New Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 Priced From £155k In The UK, Nearly £16k More Than 751HP Taycan Turbo S

Two months ago, Mercedes unveiled the AMG EQS 53 at the Munich Motor Show as the first electric vehicle to wear the AMG badge. Now, the German automaker has released pricing for it, and it’s about what you’d expect for a range-topping high-performance EV sedan.

The EQS 53 will start at £154,995 (equal to around $208,000 at current exchange rates) in the UK, or 55% more than the base EQS 450’s starting price of £99,995. It’s also more expensive than the current flagship Porsche Taycan Turbo S that’s rated for 761PS / 751HP and kicks off from £139,280 (about $186,900).

For that money, you get a dual-motor AWD drivetrain producing 649 hp (658 PS / 484 kW) and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of instant electric torque. Upgrade to the AMG Performance Package with the Night Edition that pushes the starting price to £163,900 (around $220,000) though, and that same drivetrain produces 751 hp (761 PS / 560 kW) and 752 lb-ft (1020 Nm) of torque.

The former enables a 3.8-second sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) with a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h), while the latter allows for 3.4 seconds to 62 mph with a top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). The range is the same for both, with a WLTP-estimated 358 miles (576 km) on tap from the car’s 107.8 kWh battery.

Standard features on all variants include the 56-inch Hyperscreen, an AR heads-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, a Burmester® surround sound system, a Parking package with Active Parking Assist, and 360° camera, Driving Assistance Package Plus, AMG sound programs, AMG-specific bodywork, and an AMG steering wheel.

Included with the Night Edition are 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, and sport pedals. Upgrading to the £8,995 AMG Performance Package (which is only available with the Night Edition) gets you carbon-ceramic brakes, AMG Dynamic Plus boost for Race Start, the AMG Sound Experience, the AMG Driver’s Package with increased top speed, AMG TRACK PACE, and AMG carbon-fiber interior trim.

Finally, serving as a counterpart to the bold Night Edition is the more subtle Touring specification, which comes with 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and elegant ambient lighting in the cabin. On top of that, you can opt for the £2,995 Rear Luxury Lounge package (only available with the Touring), which outfits the multi-contour rear seats with black Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery, power reclining, luxury headrests, neck and shoulder heating, comfort armrests, separate climate controls, an MBUX tablet, wireless charging, and additional USB ports.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is currently on sale now, with the first UK deliveries expected to arrive in April 2022.

2022 Mercedes-AMG SL Breaks Cover With 2+2 Seats, Fabric Top, AWD And Up To 577 HP

The millionaires’ Miata is back! Mercedes has overhauled the iconic SL roadster for only the seventh time in the model’s almost 70-year career, and this one takes on some seismic changes including standard all-wheel drive and the return of 2+2 seating after a three-decade absence.

Sometimes when automakers say a car is new, the fresh content that justifies that tag is limited to the bumpers at either end. But the SL really is new from the ground up, built on a new multi-material platform made from aluminum, steel, magnesium, and composites that it will eventually share with the next AMG GT coupe.

Measuring 185.2-inches (4705 mm) long and 106.3-inches (2700 mm) between the axles the new SL is 2.9-inches (74 mm) longer and rides on a wheelbase stretched 4.5-inches (115 mm) over the previous SL’s. It’s also 6-inches (154 mm) longer than the old AMG GT Roadster, which the SL sends to an early grave, remedying the previously bizarre situation where Mercedes had two different two-seat V8 convertible sports cars covering similar market turf.

Two Cars In One

[embedded content]

The new SL does the job of both and gets a subtle but significant name change to mark the promotion. Every version is now called Mercedes-AMG SL and comes with the AMG-specific Panamericana toothy grille to reflect that that legendary two-seater is now part of the AMG family.

And, for now, at least, every version has an engine worthy of that badge. Additional powertrain options will be added in time, including a PHEV and probably a mild-hybrid V6, but from launch, the choice is limited to a pair of M177 4.0-liter V8s you’ll recognize from other AMGs, with their two turbos once again nestled in the vee.

Choose From Two V8s, Or Wait For The PHEV

The entry-level SL 55 makes 470 hp and 516 lb-ft, while the punchier SL 63 ups those numbers to 577 hp and 590 lb-ft thanks to more turbo boost, improved airflow, and a software tweak. Even the base car can hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, but the SL 63 cuts that down to 3.6 seconds, and we’d expect the PHEV to go even harder if it borrows its hardware from the 831-hp AMG GT 63 E 4dr unveiled this September’s Munich show. Find a suitably empty stretch of derestricted autobahn and the SL 55 will top out at 183 mph, leaving the SL 63 to romp ahead to 196 mph.

Whichever of the two V8s you go for, power is channeled through Mercedes-AMG’s nine-speed automatic transmission which swaps a torque converter for a wet clutch pack that should make the SL rev faster and feel more responsive to a stab on the gas. And from there, for the first time ever in an SL, the power is sent to all four wheels, both models getting a 4Matic+ tag.

Modern five-link front suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, and rear-wheel steering also come standard on both 55 and 63, the back wheels doing the usual trick of turning the opposite way to the fronts at slow speed (though in this case up to 62mph, so not that slow) and the same way at higher speeds. But the SL 63 asserts its superiority with air suspension and active roll control; the SL 55, which you can spot by its red, rather than yellow brake calipers, makes do with conventional steel coils.

More Space, Lighter Fabric Roof

Other significant changes include the addition of two small rear seats that will accommodate bodies up to 4 ft 11-inches (1.5 m), effectively limiting them to children and Snow White’s crew, and a switch from a retractable hardtop back to a triple-layer fabric convertible top.

Ditching the retractable roof concept lowers the center of gravity and is worth a 46 lbs (21 kg) saving, and it saves on trunk space when folded, too. Mercedes claims you can fit two golf bags in the trunk even with the tops down. You struggled to get much more than a golf club in older SLs when the sun was shining.

And when the sun does break out from behind the clouds, you’ll be feeling those rays faster than before. The new roof cycles from open to closed in 15 seconds, a 5-second reduction, and can be operated at speeds of up to 37 mph. Benz’s Airscarf system that pumps warm air out of the front seat headrests comes standard ‘on eight-cylinder models’, says Mercedes, hinting that the range will be extended to include less powerful, less luxurious six-cylinder models later.

Whether those entry-level cars will drop in wheel size from the 19-inchers that feature on the SL 55 remains to be seen, but there will be plenty of options to upsize, either to the same 20-inch diameter rolling stock fitted to the SL 63, or bigger again, to 21 inches.

An SL With Attitude

Predictably, it’s the twenty-ones you can see in the pictures, and they do a great job of filling the SL’s swollen fenders. Visually, the 2022 SL has more in common with the outgoing AMG GT Roadster than it does with the dated, bland SL it replaces. The plus-two seating gives it a less cab-backward look than the Roadster, and the triangular LED headlights add some extra aggression to the face, but anyone looking to trade in a Roadster will feel right at home here.

AMG GT 4 Door owners, meanwhile, might recognize echoes of their car in the styling of the rear end, which comes standard with an automatically adjusting five-position spoiler to keep the tail glued to the ground. And if you want to make the nose equally sticky, you can option an Aerodynamics Package that includes visible bumper winglets, just like a race car’s, and an electronically adjustable carbon spoiler below the nose that extends by 1.6-inches (40 mm) at higher speeds, providing a venturi effect and cutting front axle lift by 110 lbs (50 kg) at 155 mph.

Hit The Track In Comfort

Contrast that almost invisible technology with the very visible tech inside the cabin. Mercedes opted not to deploy its full triple-display Hyperscreen dashboard as seen in the EQS sedan, choosing a more classically sporty design for the SL’s interior. And it decided against giving the SL the full suite of its latest autonomous technology we saw on the 2021 S-class, though it does have the usual steering assistance and automatic braking systems you’d expect from an expensive Mercedes.

But with an adjustable S-Class-style tablet on the console running Benz’s latest MBUX infotainment package, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display, the 2022 SL is a car that tries to carefully tread the line between sports car and luxury car, hoping it can keep both camps happy. Do you think Mercedes managed it?

New Armored 2022 Mercedes-Benz S 680 Guard 4MATIC Is A Tough Cookie To Crack

We’ve updated this story with live imagery from Mercedes’ Munich Motor Show stand. Check out the pictures below.

Mercedes-Benz’s new S 680 Guard 4MATIC received its world premiere today at the 2021 Munich Motor Show.

The German car manufacturer has been building armored vehicles since 1928 and the S 680 Guard 4MATIC includes its integrated protection system (iSS) that incorporates a self-supporting protective cell and a unique aluminum outer skin. In addition, the car features multi-layer glass that offers VR10 levels of safety, meaning it can withstand armor-piercing ammunition fired from an assault rifle. The inner surfaces of the glass are coated with polycarbonate for splinter protection.

Testing of the car’s armor was conducted by the Beschussamt Ulm, a testing and certification body for weapons, ammunition, and safety technology in Germany. In addition to being able to withstand shots from an assault rifle, the S 680 Guard 4MATIC offers protection from explosives to the VPAM ERV (Explosive Resistant Vehicles) standard. The Mercedes received top scores in its roof, floor, and side protection.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t simply strengthened the car’s shell and windows and called it a day. For example, as the armored doors are much heavier than a standard S-Class, the German automaker has equipped them with a new electro-mechanical system that makes it easier to open and close them. In addition, backup hydraulically-actuated window lifters have been fitted to ensure the windows can be raised even if the onboard power supply fails.

Elsewhere, the car includes a fire extinguishing system with an automatic triggering function and an emergency fresh air system that protects occupants from smoke and gases. Customers can also equip it with a siren, flashing lights, radios, and a panic alarm system. Michelin PAX run-flat tires are also a standard feature.

Power comes courtesy of a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 pumping out 612 hp and 612 lb-ft (830 Nm) of torque from just 2,000 rpm. This powertrain includes an all-aluminum crankcase, a one-piece chain drive, a forged crankshaft, forged pistons, and a multi-spark ignition system with twelve double ignition coils.

Mercedes-Benz offers the S 680 Guard 4MATIC in four- and five-seat guises with prices start at €457,100 ($540,000).

Electric Mercedes-Maybach Concept Teased For Munich

Mercedes-Maybach has released the first teaser video of their upcoming ultra-luxury electric vehicle concept.

Originally announced in July, the mysterious model features a Maybach-branded grille with horizontal slats. While the latter is fully enclosed, the concept isn’t completely focused on aerodynamics as it has a hood ornament unlike the EQA, EQB and EQS.

Additional details are hard to make out, but it appears the concept will have large wheels and a sizable rear window. That isn’t much to go on, but the company teased “After 100 years, it’s time for a new beginning” and that will occur on September 5th when Mercedes-Maybach unveils the “future of sophisticated luxury.” This builds on a previous tease about “how the 100-year tradition of ultimate automotive luxury can be carried forward into a new era.”

While the company is staying tight-lipped about specifics, Mercedes has already confirmed plans for electric Maybachs. In particular, the automaker teased the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV this summer and it features a two-tone design with Maybach badging on the rear pillar. Rumors have also suggested the company could offer a Maybach version of the standard EQS.

It’s hard to say what the concept is at this point, but we’ll find out full details in the coming days.

Is This Funky E-Class Actually A Next-Gen Test Mule In Highly Effective Camouflage?

Mercedes appears to be testing the next-generation E-Class with a lightly modified test mule high in the German mountains.

The photos, sent to us by our trusty spy photographers, show a dark red E-Class with plastic fender flares, unusual sensors, and a “Brake-Test” sticker on the back. The whole look actually looks rugged and fun but implies that Mercedes is already in the process of getting the W214 E-Class ready for production.

If those fender flares and the seemingly extended track-width are anything to go on, that would suggest that the next E-Class is going to go wider than the current model. Speaking of the current model, although it fits in with Mercedes’ current design language, it’s actually still a generation behind the C-Class and the S-Class.

Read Also: Mercedes-Benz Gives 2021 E-Class A Face And Tail Lift Along With New Straight-Six

The update that Mercedes gave the E-Class in March 2020 didn’t herald a new generation. Instead, it was just a facelift that introduced new design elements, the latest MBUX infotainment technology, fresh safety tech, and a pair of new inline-six-cylinder engines. The gas versions make between 156-367 PS (154-362 HP/115-270 kW) and the diesel versions from 160-330 PS (158-326 HP/118-243 kW).

The current, fifth-generation W213 E-Class, though, launched in 2016 and is therefore getting a little long in the tooth by Germany’s premium sedan standards. A new generation is therefore expected before too long. Whether Mercedes will include the level of electrification that defines the new C-Class remains to be seen, but odds are good.

The AMG version of the E-Class is likely to make use of an electric motor to supplement its engine, too. A trademark application for “E73” may suggest a big hybrid to stand out above the rest of the lineup.

Although we’re still a little far out to know when Mercedes plans on revealing the new E-Class, the recent facelift and this mule would make a 2023 or 2024 debut sensible.

At Half The Price, Is The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 More Than Half As Good As The Cullinan?

SUVs are currently among the most popular vehicles in the auto industry, so it comes as no surprise that many manufacturers are trying their hand in the segment. So much so, that even ultra-luxury brands that had never had such a model before, like Rolls-Royce, have gotten in on the action.

The newest kid on the block is the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, but at about half the price, does it have what it takes to compete with Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan? Automotive YouTube channel Throttle House attempts to find out in a side-by-side comparison of the two.

Read More: Bespoke Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge Was Created For A Google Exec

Starting with the exterior, it’s immediately obvious how much more presence the Rolls has than the Maybach. Its large, slab-sided design just carries much more significance than the GLS, which doesn’t look too much different from its regular, $85,000 cheaper variant.

Moving on to the driving experience, the Cullinan wins again, as its sound deadening and ride quality are beyond compare. That being said, despite the GLS being half the price, Throttle House believes its ride is more than three quarters of the Rolls-Royce’s. As for the smoothness of the engines, the Rolls was also found to have the upper hand, although that could just be due to the cylinder count (12 vs. 8) rather than actual quality differences between the two.

See Also: 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 Offers A Vault-Like Quality And A Wealth Of Features

Last, and probably most important, is the interior. The Cullinan excels in its materials and overall quality, but the Maybach blows it out of the water in terms of rear seat accommodations, which is quite possibly one of the most essential aspects of these types of vehicles. Unlike the sedans in Rolls-Royce’s lineup, the Cullinan doesn’t have fancy back seats like the GLS, which have heating, cooling, massaging, full reclining, tray tables, and a champagne cooler among other things.

In the end, the verdict was that the Mercedes has outstanding rear seat luxury, but not much else to justify its comparatively low (but still expensive) price over a normal GLS. The Rolls-Royce is just more special, and while the price of admission is high, you certainly get what you pay for.

YouTuber Crashes Mercedes G63 AMG Through Fence Trying To Do Donuts

YouTube channel DailyDrivenExotics (DDE) has done it again with another headline-grabbing car accident, this time in a Mercedes G-Class. In a video featuring a series of off- and on-road shenanigans, the bunch managed to crash the G-Wagen straight through a fence, nearly rolling it over.

The video begins with DDE going through their showroom, which includes their newly-completed, custom windshield-less Lamborghini Huracan, among many other unique vehicles.

They then proceed to take said Huracan out and do donuts in the parking lot, until they have the idea to do the same with the G63 in the dirt lot next to it.

Despite the fact that it is supposed to be going up for sale soon, they take the G-Wagen onto the dirt lot and begin playing around. They kick up some mud and dirt, and slide around a bit, all accompanied by the G63’s V8 growl. However, after a few minutes of fun, they send the off-roader directly into a metal fence after rolling it over an embankment near the edge of the lot.

We’ve seen lots of Youtubers doing silly things just to garner views, but we guess crashing a G63, and nearly rolling over, most likely doesn’t fit in that category. In spite of the damage done to SUV, as they make their way over to it, they are laughing and smiling as if they didn’t just crash a range-topping Mercedes G-Class.

Read More: Should You Go Get The Old Mercedes G500 4×4² Or Wait For The New One?

Unfortunately for them, the damage was fairly substantial. The crash resulted in scratches all over the roof and hood, and half of a metal pole drove its way through the front bumper, with the other half wedging itself in the frame and needing to be cut out. It should be repairable, but we’re not too sure if the next owner of this car would be happy to hear that a metal rod had previously impaled the front end of his new G-Wagen.

You can watch the whole video, crash included, for yourself below.

The plug-in hybrid king was the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (4,209 units), with the Volvo XC40 and Volkswagen Passat completing the podium, and the BMW 3-Series, Audi Q5, VW Golf, Renault Captur, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo XC60 and Mercedes-Benz GLC following.

In the mild-hybrid and full-hybrid category, Toyota nabbed the two top spots, with the Yaris (13,338 units) and Corolla (9,728), while the bronze medal went to the Fiat Panda. The Ford Puma, Fiat 500, Toyota C-HR, RAV4, Suzuki Swift, Ford Focus, and Suzuki Ignis completed the chart.

The Golf was Europe’s best-selling car in October, accounting for 27,530 units, followed by the smaller Renault Clio and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, with 22,588 and 21,220 units sold respectively. Other popular models were the Peugeot 208, Fiat Panda, Renault Captur, Toyota Yaris, Peugeot 2008, Skoda Octavia, and Citroen C3.

New car registrations were down by 7 percent last month in Europe, from 1.21 to 1.13 million vehicles.

Watch The Mercedes EQS Electric Luxury Sedan Being Tested At The Nurburgring

<!––>

<!––>

The all-electric Mercedes EQS has been spied during a recent round of testing at the Nurburgring as the automaker is getting it ready for the production line.

Like other prototypes snapped by our own spy photographers, this car is dressed in camouflage that does a good job of hiding its exterior design. Evidently, Mercedes is eager to keep the final design of the EQS a secret for as long as it can. With that being said, the camouflage cannot hide everything. The overall shape of the EQS immediately catches the eye and, thanks to the elongated roofline and long wheelbase, rear-seat passengers should have plenty of head and legroom.

Read Also: 2022 Mercedes EQS Debut Getting Closer As Electric Flagship Starts Nürburgring Testing

Underpinning the EQS is the automaker’s latest Modular Electric Architecture (MEA) and all signs point towards the EV getting a pair of electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle. Mercedes will obviously sell the EQS in a number of different configurations with varying levels of power. The base model should have at least 400 hp, while an AMG-tuned variant can be expected to churn out upwards of 600 hp.

The driver behind the wheel of this EQS prototype clearly wasn’t holding back when testing the car as its tires can be heading screeching through some of the corners. While the EQS has not been designed with a focus on track performance, it’s clear that the electric executive sedan, which also features all-wheel steering, handles very well.

Mercedes-Benz should premiere the EQS before the end of the year with production due to commence in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet Is For The Autonomous And Electric Future

<!––>

<!––>

Say hello to the Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet, a futuristic concept car that shows what premium vehicles could look like when Level 5 autonomous technology becomes a reality.

Designed by Lujie Huang as his senior thesis while studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, the Vision Duet is a three-seat grand tourer that aims to offer a new kind of road trip experience with a very innovative design.

Read Also: Mercedes SLR-AMG Concept Design Takes The SLR McLaren To The Future

Huang believes that through the shift to electrification and full autonomy, there will be a change in the grand touring experience from a driver-focused into a riding-focused one. With that in mind, the Vision Duet lacks any traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals and instead has two comfortable, forward-facing seats and a large table in the center of the cabin. When the vehicle is parked, the glass roof can slide back and a third seat up front can be used. The designer was heavily inspired by the seating layout of leisure boats in creating the Vision Duet.

From the outside, the concept looks unlike any current Mercedes-Benz, but that’s no bad thing. Up front, it has a distinctive grille with a large three-pointed star, while the implementation of an electric powertrain has also allowed for an exceptionally short front overhang. There are also a set of small headlights connected by an LED light bar, and at the rear there’s an LED light bar and a sleek and sculptural bumper.

Note: This is an independent design study from Lujie Huang and is in no way related to or endorsed by Mercedes-Benz.
