At Half The Price, Is The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 More Than Half As Good As The Cullinan?

SUVs are currently among the most popular vehicles in the auto industry, so it comes as no surprise that many manufacturers are trying their hand in the segment. So much so, that even ultra-luxury brands that had never had such a model before, like Rolls-Royce, have gotten in on the action.

The newest kid on the block is the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, but at about half the price, does it have what it takes to compete with Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan? Automotive YouTube channel Throttle House attempts to find out in a side-by-side comparison of the two.

Starting with the exterior, it’s immediately obvious how much more presence the Rolls has than the Maybach. Its large, slab-sided design just carries much more significance than the GLS, which doesn’t look too much different from its regular, $85,000 cheaper variant.

Moving on to the driving experience, the Cullinan wins again, as its sound deadening and ride quality are beyond compare. That being said, despite the GLS being half the price, Throttle House believes its ride is more than three quarters of the Rolls-Royce’s. As for the smoothness of the engines, the Rolls was also found to have the upper hand, although that could just be due to the cylinder count (12 vs. 8) rather than actual quality differences between the two.

Last, and probably most important, is the interior. The Cullinan excels in its materials and overall quality, but the Maybach blows it out of the water in terms of rear seat accommodations, which is quite possibly one of the most essential aspects of these types of vehicles. Unlike the sedans in Rolls-Royce’s lineup, the Cullinan doesn’t have fancy back seats like the GLS, which have heating, cooling, massaging, full reclining, tray tables, and a champagne cooler among other things.

In the end, the verdict was that the Mercedes has outstanding rear seat luxury, but not much else to justify its comparatively low (but still expensive) price over a normal GLS. The Rolls-Royce is just more special, and while the price of admission is high, you certainly get what you pay for.

YouTuber Crashes Mercedes G63 AMG Through Fence Trying To Do Donuts

YouTube channel DailyDrivenExotics (DDE) has done it again with another headline-grabbing car accident, this time in a Mercedes G-Class. In a video featuring a series of off- and on-road shenanigans, the bunch managed to crash the G-Wagen straight through a fence, nearly rolling it over.

The video begins with DDE going through their showroom, which includes their newly-completed, custom windshield-less Lamborghini Huracan, among many other unique vehicles.

They then proceed to take said Huracan out and do donuts in the parking lot, until they have the idea to do the same with the G63 in the dirt lot next to it.

Despite the fact that it is supposed to be going up for sale soon, they take the G-Wagen onto the dirt lot and begin playing around. They kick up some mud and dirt, and slide around a bit, all accompanied by the G63’s V8 growl. However, after a few minutes of fun, they send the off-roader directly into a metal fence after rolling it over an embankment near the edge of the lot.

We’ve seen lots of Youtubers doing silly things just to garner views, but we guess crashing a G63, and nearly rolling over, most likely doesn’t fit in that category. In spite of the damage done to SUV, as they make their way over to it, they are laughing and smiling as if they didn’t just crash a range-topping Mercedes G-Class.

Unfortunately for them, the damage was fairly substantial. The crash resulted in scratches all over the roof and hood, and half of a metal pole drove its way through the front bumper, with the other half wedging itself in the frame and needing to be cut out. It should be repairable, but we’re not too sure if the next owner of this car would be happy to hear that a metal rod had previously impaled the front end of his new G-Wagen.

Watch The Mercedes EQS Electric Luxury Sedan Being Tested At The Nurburgring

<!––>

<!––>

The all-electric Mercedes EQS has been spied during a recent round of testing at the Nurburgring as the automaker is getting it ready for the production line.

Like other prototypes snapped by our own spy photographers, this car is dressed in camouflage that does a good job of hiding its exterior design. Evidently, Mercedes is eager to keep the final design of the EQS a secret for as long as it can. With that being said, the camouflage cannot hide everything. The overall shape of the EQS immediately catches the eye and, thanks to the elongated roofline and long wheelbase, rear-seat passengers should have plenty of head and legroom.

Underpinning the EQS is the automaker’s latest Modular Electric Architecture (MEA) and all signs point towards the EV getting a pair of electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle. Mercedes will obviously sell the EQS in a number of different configurations with varying levels of power. The base model should have at least 400 hp, while an AMG-tuned variant can be expected to churn out upwards of 600 hp.

The driver behind the wheel of this EQS prototype clearly wasn’t holding back when testing the car as its tires can be heading screeching through some of the corners. While the EQS has not been designed with a focus on track performance, it’s clear that the electric executive sedan, which also features all-wheel steering, handles very well.

Mercedes-Benz should premiere the EQS before the end of the year with production due to commence in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet Is For The Autonomous And Electric Future

<!––>

<!––>

Say hello to the Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet, a futuristic concept car that shows what premium vehicles could look like when Level 5 autonomous technology becomes a reality.

Designed by Lujie Huang as his senior thesis while studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, the Vision Duet is a three-seat grand tourer that aims to offer a new kind of road trip experience with a very innovative design.

Huang believes that through the shift to electrification and full autonomy, there will be a change in the grand touring experience from a driver-focused into a riding-focused one. With that in mind, the Vision Duet lacks any traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals and instead has two comfortable, forward-facing seats and a large table in the center of the cabin. When the vehicle is parked, the glass roof can slide back and a third seat up front can be used. The designer was heavily inspired by the seating layout of leisure boats in creating the Vision Duet.

From the outside, the concept looks unlike any current Mercedes-Benz, but that’s no bad thing. Up front, it has a distinctive grille with a large three-pointed star, while the implementation of an electric powertrain has also allowed for an exceptionally short front overhang. There are also a set of small headlights connected by an LED light bar, and at the rear there’s an LED light bar and a sleek and sculptural bumper.

Note: This is an independent design study from Lujie Huang and is in no way related to or endorsed by Mercedes-Benz.

Range Rover Sport SVR And Mercedes-AMG G63 Get Summoned For A Series Of Tests

The Range Rover Sport SVR and Mercedes-AMG G63 got together again, this time in the Middle East, to show what they’re made of under the scorching sun.

Deemed as one of the most versatile vehicles out there due to its impressive straight-line performance and rock-crawling ability, the new generation G63 was driven flat out on a long straight against its challenger, the Range Rover Sport SVR, which is no slouch either.

Watch Also: Range Rover Sport SVR Has No Chance Against Mercedes-AMG G63 – Or Does It?

The 2020 model year SVR example tested by ArabGT packs a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that produces 567 HP (575 PS / 423 kW) and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm) of torque. From nought to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) it needs 4.5 seconds, and with the throttle floored, it will eventually run out of breath at 174 mph (280 km/h).

Equally fast to 62 mph (100 km/h), but with a lower top speed of “only” 149 mph (240 km/h) with the optional AMG Driver’s Package, the range-topping variant of the new-gen G-Wagen uses a twin turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. In terms of power, we are looking at 577 HP (585 PS / 430 kW) and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm).

The balance does tilt in favor of the G63, but power figures alone don’t always tell the whole story. That said, let’s see which of the two is quicker in a straight line acceleration in the following video, which is in Arabic, but it does speak the international language of speed and fun on four wheels. The action begins at the 2:10 mark, so you know the drill.

How Does A $100k 2007 Maybach 57S Compare To A 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S560?

The story of the revived Maybach brand and its failure to compete with established super luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley is too well know so there’s no need to repeat it once more.

Nevertheless, the Maybach 57 and 62’s defeat by the likes of Rolls-Royce Phantom and Bentley Arnage had nothing to do with the quality of the German super luxury sedans. As the following video from Throttle House reveals, the Maybach 57 and 62 were rock solid luxury saloons that offered a level of quality modern-day Mercedes-Maybach models struggle to replicate.

Speaking of today’s Mercedes-Maybach, the comparison pits a 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S560 against a 2007 Maybach 57S. You’d think 13 years is a big difference and the S560 will have no trouble whatsoever defeating the old car.

Watch Also: The Maybach 57S May Have Lost $300,000 In Value, But It’s Still As Luxurious As Ever

Well, things are more complicated than that. Obviously, money is the main criteria here and the fact of the matter is the 2020 S560 costs more than twice as much as the 2007 Maybach. For the equivalent of $83,650, you can pick up this exact 57S from Canada, while a high-spec Mercedes-Maybach S560 like this one will set you back around $190,300.

There’s no point arguing here, the Maybach 57S is better value proposition despite being extremely expensive to maintain; after all, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is not much more economical to keep on the road either.

When talking about super luxury sedans, owners rate very highly the sense of occasion these cars offer. All things considered, it’s safe to say the old Maybach feel more special than the new S-Class-based Maybach. Everything looks and feels (and pretty much is) bespoke in the 57S, whereas the S560 is, at the end of the day, a well-equipped top-of-the-range S-Class.

The video does not name a winner or a loser, but considering that Daimler reportedly lost over €330,000 ($388,500) on every old Maybach it sold, plus its much more affordable price compared to its modern-day successor, which one would you get?

Can A Mercedes SLR Keep Up With An Aston DBS Superleggera And Ferrari GTC4Lusso?

The market for luxurious, high-performance Grand Tourers has never been more hotly contested and CarWow recently brought together three particularly fine GT’s for a series of performance tests.

The real star of this comparison test is the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Sure, it is almost 20 years since production of the German icon commenced but when it hit the market, it offered up similar performance to the Porsche Carrera GT but in a much more approachable, comfortable, and refined package. There wasn’t anything quite like it in the early 2000s.

Fast forward to today and there are heaps of exotic Grand Tourers to choose from and in this test, we are presented with an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera and a Ferrari GTC4Lusso.

Watch Also: Is The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante As Awesome As It Looks?

In terms of grunt, the SLR is slightly down on its modern-day rivals. Whereas its 5.4-liter supercharged V8 churns out 617 hp and 575 lb-ft (780 Nm) of torque, the 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V12 of the GTC4Lusso has 681 hp and 514 lb-ft (697 Nm). The DBS Superleggera is the most powerful of the bunch with 715 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) from its 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12.

Despite its power deficit, the SLR McLaren performs surprisingly well. A handful of drag races were staged and in the first, the Ferrari took the win over the Aston Martin with the Mercedes finishing last. In the third drag race, however, the SLR actually got off the line much quicker than the Aston and only trailed behind the Ferrari.

BMW M8 Competition Takes On Mercedes-AMG GT R And Audi R8 On The Track

The M8 Competition is BMW’s most powerful production vehicle ever, but despite bearing this bold title, it’s by no means a supercar. Nevertheless, it’s got supercar-like performance and can put a really big smile on the face of its driver.

So, the most powerful Bimmer ever can smoke a lot of big names in a straight line, with the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) taking 3.1 seconds in the Competition Convertible. In this spec, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 pumps out 617 HP (625 PS / 460 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, and the car has an MSRP of $155,500 in the U.S.

We know what it can do on paper, but how does it translate into the real world, when its rivals are two open-top supercars and the battle ground is the Lausitzring circuit? AutoBildSportsCars had the M8 Competition Convertible pitted against the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster and Audi R8 Performance Spyder, to see which one is faster around the German track.

Before checking out the video below, let’s talk specs – and more specifically, those of the other two competitors. The GT R Roadster is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that puts out 577 HP (585 PS / 430 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm). The 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint takes 3.5 seconds in this model, which starts at $189,750.

The 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 in the R8 Performance Spyder, on the other hand, develops 611 HP (620 PS / 456 kW) and 427 lb-ft (579 Nm) in the Euro-spec version, which was the one put to the test, for a 0-60 mph of 3.1 seconds. The U.S. model comes with 602 HP (610 PS / 449 kW) and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm), and adds two tenths of a second to the sprint time, while pricing starts at $208,100.
