2023 Peugeot 508: Here’s What We Know And What To Expect From The Mid-Life Facelift

This illustration was made by Jean Francois Hubert/SB-Medien for CarScoops. It is a speculative render that is neither related to nor endorsed by Peugeot.

The second-generation 508 is the flagship of Peugeot’s range, and one of the few remaining contestants in the midsize sedan segment. While it doesn’t show, the model debuted almost four years ago at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show which means that Peugeot could be working on a mid-life facelift.

The Peugeot 508 is considered one of the most stylish models in the D-Segment, adopting a low-slung five-door fastback coupé-saloon bodystyle. It is also the first production model to introduce the signature tusk-shaped LEDs on the front bumper that were later applied to the whole range. The facelift will likely build upon the successful recipe while adopting fresh design elements from newer models to freshen up its style.

As you can see from the speculative rendering created by Jean Francois Hubert/SB-Medien for Carscoops, the 508 could inherit the Peugeot’s latest crest emblem that is currently used only by the new-generation 308, alongside a redesigned grille just like in the facelifted Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs from last year. The black accents and the 3D-style graphics make the grille appear larger despite being mostly covered for better aerodynamics.

Like the aforementioned SUVs, the 508 will likely get a redesigned bumper with additional faux intakes in the sides, further emphasizing the presence of vertical LEDs. The headlights could also get slightly redesigned LED graphics, merging nicely with the grille. Besides the new face, the 508 will likely remain largely the same, possibly with new options for exterior colors and wheel designs. The rear end could also get a few tweaks on the claw-inspired LED taillight graphics and the rear bumper garnish.

Since the current model is also available in estate form, chances are that the facelift will be adopted by the 508 SW. After all, Peugeot showed its dedication to low-slung family haulers with the premiere of the new-generation 308 SW earlier this year.

Despite being four years old, the interior of the Peugeot 508 still looks like it comes from the future, thanks to the high-mounted center console, the aluminum-style buttons, the inclined infotainment touchscreen up to 10-inches in diameter, and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, there are a few updates that could make the dashboard even more attractive, including the addition of the 3D instruments from Peugeot’s latest i-Cockpit, alongside new trim options and more ADAS features as standard.

Like in most mid-cycle updates, the EMP2-based Peugeot 508 is expected to get slightly cleaner versions of the same engines. The French company has announced plans of electrifying its whole range by 2025, before going EV-only in Europe by 2030. This means that the updated 508 will be one of the last ICE-powered models by Peugeot.

Since electrification becomes more and more popular, the plug-in hybrid variants are expected to be the core of the range. Those are the Hybrid 225 e-EAT8 with a combined output of 222 hp (165 kW / 225 PS) and front-wheel-drive, and the 508 PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered) performance flagship producing a combined 360 PS (355 HP / 265 kW) with all-wheel-drive.

The 508 was introduced with the 1.6-liter Puretech gasoline and the 2.0-liter BlueHDi diesel engines although later on, it became available with the smaller 1.2-liter PureTech and 1.5-liter BlueHDi producing 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS). It is not clear if Peugeot will opt for a simplified ICE range giving more emphasis on electrification and lowering its fleet average emissions in Europe.

Besides the European market, the 508 is also available in the Middle East, and in China as the long-wheelbase 508L. Judging from the previous facelifts by Peugeot, the updated 508 could appear as early as next year prior to a 2023 market launch since the French automaker has already announced minor updates for the 2022 model year.

Maserati’s Project Rekall Brings The 1990s Shamal Into The 2020s; Should They Make It?

<!––>

<!––>

Maserati, which is entering an exciting new era with the mid-engined MC20, recently took to social media to share images of a modern-day interpretation of the Shamal.

These designs were shared on the Maserati Fuoriserie account on Instagram and show a vehicle known as ‘Project Rekall.’ The car has some retro vibes, and while it’s unlikely to spawn any kind of production variant, it certainly looks good.

For starters, the overall shape of the original Shamal has been retained, meaning there is the same boxy bodywork with sharp lines and squared surfaces. One of the key changes made is the fitment of new LED headlights and daytime running lights, while the front end also features a more pronounced splitter.

Elsewhere, Maserati’s designers have tweaked the rear end with new LED taillights, a sharper rear lip spoiler and new tailpipes. The car also has a raised roof spoiler and a set of seven-spoke wheels.

The interior of the Project Rekall is largely the same as the original Shamal but does feature some alterations, most notably the inclusion of a (rather retro looking) digital gauge cluster and a set of carbon fiber-backed bucket seats.

Maserati’s Fuoriserie account on Instagram doesn’t just promote the automaker’s Fuoriserie customization program. but also showcases a number of intriguing design studies that won’t reach the production line but demonstrate the diversity of the brand’s designs.

Independent Designer Reinvents The Lancia Stratos As A Modern Supercar

Lancia had so many hits during its 114-year history it’s very hard to pick the most influential car of them all.

Having said that, one obvious candidate is the Lancia Stratos, and for several reasons. First of all, Marcelo Gandini’s wedge-shaped masterpiece was a break with tradition, as it looked like no other Lancia before it and marked the brand’s return to working with Bertone, where Gandini was employed while designing the Stratos.

The Stratos was also the first car unveiled after Fiat took over the company in 1969, proving that the Turin-based giant was serious about making Lancia a pearl of its crown.

Watch Also: The Story Of The Lancia Stratos Has Never Been Told So Beautifully

Last, but not least, the Stratos was a trailblazer for the brand’s unrivaled success in the World Rally Championship and started a new era in motorsport as the first car designed from scratch for rallying. To this day, no other manufacturer has more WRC constructors’ titles than Lancia. Of the 10 titles, the first three were brought by the Stratos.

While the Stratos has a glorious past, it has no present or future as Lancia has been relegated to an Italy-only brand building a single model, the Ypsilon supermini. Sure, we should be thankful for the Ferrari F430-based Stratos built by Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT), but the retro-styled supercar is an independent effort that has nothing to do with Lancia.

Mind you, there are many Lancia fans who fantasize about a modern-day Stratos and designer Guilherme Araujo is one of them. His vision of a next-gen Stratos is truly spectacular and looks fresh and original even though it clearly pays tribute to the Stratos Zero Concept from 1970 and the Stratos HF rally car that followed a year later.

Combining a dramatic wedge shape with simple graphics, Araujo’s Lancia L Concept Homage is the perfect gift for the Stratos Zero’s 50th anniversary this year. It’s also a sad reminder of what we’re missing out on from today’s Lancia. We have nothing more to add as these renderings speak for themselves.

Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet Is For The Autonomous And Electric Future

<!––>

<!––>

Say hello to the Mercedes-Benz Vision Duet, a futuristic concept car that shows what premium vehicles could look like when Level 5 autonomous technology becomes a reality.

Designed by Lujie Huang as his senior thesis while studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, the Vision Duet is a three-seat grand tourer that aims to offer a new kind of road trip experience with a very innovative design.

Huang believes that through the shift to electrification and full autonomy, there will be a change in the grand touring experience from a driver-focused into a riding-focused one. With that in mind, the Vision Duet lacks any traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals and instead has two comfortable, forward-facing seats and a large table in the center of the cabin. When the vehicle is parked, the glass roof can slide back and a third seat up front can be used. The designer was heavily inspired by the seating layout of leisure boats in creating the Vision Duet.

From the outside, the concept looks unlike any current Mercedes-Benz, but that’s no bad thing. Up front, it has a distinctive grille with a large three-pointed star, while the implementation of an electric powertrain has also allowed for an exceptionally short front overhang. There are also a set of small headlights connected by an LED light bar, and at the rear there’s an LED light bar and a sleek and sculptural bumper.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Transformed From Luxury Sedan To Sumptuous Family Hauler

You didn’t really think the new generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class would escape the rendering frenzy, did you?

Truth be told it’s not a frenzy, not yet at least, as what we have here is a single illustration that depicts the uncrowned luxury car king in a new body style.

With a reshaped back end, an elongated roof complete with thin rails and two more side windows, the 2021 S-Class has been turned into an elegant estate by XTomi. Despite that, it is safe to say that Mercedes would never make such a thing.

What they will do is start selling their new flagship sedan in a few months, with the first batch of cars expected to hit the U.S. shores sometime in Q1 next year.

Boasting an evolutionary design that brings it closer to the smaller E- and C-Class, as well as taillights inspired by the latest CLS, the all-new S-Class will launch with an engine family comprising of electrified six- and eight-cylinder engines, while a plug-in hybrid will follow shortly.

In Europe, Merc’s latest range topper will feature a selection of petrol and diesel engines, in the S450, S500, S350d, S350d 4Matic and S400d 4Matic, with the first two packing a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid with 362 and 429 HP respectively. In the US, the 2021 S-Class will be available in S500 4Matic and S580 4Matic guises, with the latter being powered by a mild-hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that puts out 496 HP.

Toyota H2+ Concept Wants To Blend The Past With The Future

The vehicle you’re looking at is dubbed the Toyota H2+ Concept, and while it only exists in the virtual world, it shows what a high-performance coupe from the Japanese automaker could look like in the modern age.

This design comes from David Gallego and takes inspiration from Toyota models of yesteryear and combines them with the automaker’s current design philosophy. Key inspiration has been taken from the Mk4 Supra and the iconic Toyota 2000GT.

Although the H2+ Concept may look like an out-and-out supercar, it has actually been designed to have quite a spacious interior, in a not way too dissimilar to the Koenigsegg Gemera. However, whereas the Gemera has four seats, the H2+ Concept has three seats; two in the front row and one in the second row. The cabin also offers some adjustability and allows the front passenger to lie back or for the two passenger seats to be removed completely to make way for greater cargo space.

As for the outside, it is extremely striking and is made up of lots of sharp and angular lines. The front is particularly intriguing thanks to the futuristic LED headlights that also house cameras and sensors.

Viewed from above, we get a clear view of the wraparound windshield and the glass roof. The rear is perhaps our favorite area of the car and has sharp LED taillights with a similar shape to the painted nose section of a Toyota Aygo.

Note: This is an independent design from David Gallego and has not been officially endorsed by Toyota.

Would Anyone Buy A Ford Mustang Mach-E Off-Roader Like This?

Customer deliveries of the Ford Mustang Mach-E will kick off in the not too distant future heralding a new era for the Mustang nameplate.

The Mustang Mach-E is a very important vehicle for the car manufacturer and spearheads its future range of EVs. While debate continues to rage online about whether or not it should be called a Mustang, we happen to be quite fond of the design that pays tribute to ICE-powered Mustangs while bringing with it a unique EV style.

The off-road-inspired Mach-E in these renderings from Abimelec Design is an interesting proposition. Immediately making the vehicle stand out are a set of new wheels and massive BF Goodrich mud-terrain tires that would give the EV the grip it needs to hustle its way through some pretty treacherous terrain. To fit these tires, the ride height has also been increased while there are also flared wheel arches at all four corners.

Elsewhere, the designer has rendered a set of three spotlights on the frunk while also covering the headlights in a yellow tint. At the rear, the Mach-E render is more aggressive than the actual EV thanks to a sharp new diffuser and an enlarged spoiler stretching off from the roof.

These renderings come just a week after a mysterious ‘spy video’ of a Mustang Mach-E prototype hit the web. In that video, Ford engineers could be seen drifting the EV around a paved testing facility, leading some to speculate the car could be used by Ken Block in some form.
